Legend Confirmed! Ex-Soldier’s 17-year old Nokia 3310 still going strong after witnessing wars and washing machine spins

There are rumors about its return everywhere. But the original legend has gone through many tribulations and still survives. And it hasn’t just survived to limp. It has been looked after by a 49-year old former soldier, and is in such an excellent state of health, it only requires a charge, once in ten days! We’re talking about a 17-year old Nokia 3310 which is still going strong powered by the same battery it came out of the box with.

Dave Mitchell purchased this bomb proof phone in the year 2000, and the device has turned out to be just that. Dave’s trusty Nokia 3310 has traveled with him on his military tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, has gone through a washing machine’s wash cycle, been stamped upon, and also submerged in some curry sauce once. But it still is in perfect working condition. Mr Mitchell even goes on to say that the phone is perhaps made of Kryptonite – it’s that indestructible.

The 3310 continues to be Dave’s primary phone, although his son tried several times to get him to upgrade. People even cracked jokes about his phone, but Mr Mitchell resolutely stuck to his choice. He is one of those rare personalities who believe in the charm of analogue, and admits he doesn’t like taking selfies. He also insists there is ‘freedom’ in not being connected to the internet and that it helps him to be more sociable. Dave insists he’s going to keep the phone for as long as he can.

He goes on to say, “I’m not one of those people sat at a table with friends just staring at their phone. If I’m bored and I’ve got a spare moment I have Snake on my phone. It’s a fantastic game. People do have a laugh about it when I take it out, and call me old fashioned. Well maybe I am, but I have the last laugh when they get cracked screens and my phone seems to survive everything. The downside now is that my daughter can call me if she needs a lift, so sometimes I become a bit of a taxi.

If you’re still wondering what the fuss is all about. The Nokia 3310’s 900-1000 mAh battery powered an 84 × 48 pixel pure monochrome display and the phone offered many features which were considered rare for those times. These include many utilities, such as a calculator, stop watch, a reminder function and the extremely popular game, ‘Snake’.
