The first trailer for the Edward Snowden movie is as cryptic as the subject himself

The first teaser trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcoming movie on Edward Snowden has dropped on YouTube today. And when we say teaser, we mean it in the most literal sense: the one and a half minute video shows absolutely no glimpse of the actual movie itself.

Still, it strikes just the tone that we have come to expect from Stone. Dark, gloomy, and full of ominous foreboding, the trailer also suits its touchy subject, the life of Edward Snowden, the world’s most famous whistleblower and now America’s No. 1 most wanted man.

Simply titled Snowden, the movie is based on the books The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding, and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena. It is directed by Oliver Stone – who also made JFK, Nixon, and W – so you can be rest assured it won’t shy away from touching upon more prickly aspects of Snowden’s life and the devastating fallout of his revealations. Even this teaser is bound to ruffle a few feathers itself, with the lines “One nation/under surveillance/for liberty/and justice for all” portrayed over an upside down American flag.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the titular character while Nicolas Cage will play a senior intelligence official. The film co-stars Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, and Rhys Ifans.

Meanwhile, here’s a first look at Gordon-Levitt as Snowden from another source:

And the official plot synopsis from Open Road Pictures:[blockquote type=”left”]“Snowden stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and is written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Stone. The script is based on the books The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena.”[/blockquote]
Well, looks like we won’t have to worry about trailers spoiling too much about the movies with this one, is it?
