Apple’s latest iPhone 6 ad targets mobile gamers

Despite their cutting edge technology and design, gaming isn’t something you traditionally associate with Apple’s products. For that you have the PC master race, and the PlayStation/Xbox/Nintendo triumvirate.

Mobile gaming, that casual pastime that hardcore gamers scoff at, is another thing however. Thanks to the huge number of high quality paid and free games on the App Store, the A8/A8X processors’ incredible driving power, and that lush Retina display, gaming on iOS is a much better experience than its Android counterparts. Moreover, careful curation and stringent rules for selection means that only high quality games end up on the App Store, for the most part.

Apple recognizes this and so they have released a new ad targeted at the gaming demographic for the first time. The game featured in the video is Vain Glory, a medieval style multiplayer online battle arena game where players use magic and a plethora of potions to face off one another. Remember the ‘scarf guy’ from developer Super Evil Mega Corp, who stole the show from Tim Cook’s iPhone 6 keynote? Yes, this is that game.

Apple has been showing more and more interest towards the gaming community in the last few years. Before this, they have given pride of place to the Anki DRIVE AI racecar system in their keynote, and used Epic Zen Garden to show off the power of their new Metal API as well what’s currently possible on mobile devices with Unreal Engine 4.
