Call them what you will; trailers, teasers or sneak peeks, trailers for trailers of upcoming movies is a very dumb idea. For one, it is pointless, and it shows absolutely nothing of the movie itself while shoring up audience expectations unnecessarily. We hate it, of course.
This new teaser trailer for the upcoming Deadpool movie, though, is a sweet exception.
Narrated by the mercenary with the motormouth (but, of course) Deadpool is shaping up from the cheap underdog of the superhero world to something to look forward to. Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
And Deadpool is one of the few superheroes who break the fourth wall, taking to his audience directly, so it is only fair that he narrates the trailer for his trailer too.
Deadpool has been a passion project for actor Ryan Reynolds, who lobbied hard to make the movie, and then harder to keep its ‘R’ rating, in keeping with the superhero’s foul-mouthed persona. For the studios, a harder ‘R’ rating rather than the kid-friendly PG-13 means potential loss of revenue in merchandising and affliated services.
Reynolds and director Tim Miller wowed the crowd in Hall H at Comic-Con after showing the first footage of the Merc with the Mouth, receiving a standing ovation and demands for an encore.
Deadpool also stars Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Gina Carano, Ed Skrein and T. J. Miller.
The movie is set to hit theaters Feb. 12, 2016.
Chimichangas all around!
