John Wick movie is coming as a VR first-person shooter video game

John Wick was one of the most criminally underrated movies of last year, not just by action thriller margins, but as a genuinely all-round entertainer. It announced the return to form of the Matrix star Keanu Reeves after his recent string of not-bad-but-just-so-so action thrillers.

Now Lionsgate and Starbreeze Studios have announced a partnership to bring a virtual reality (VR) first-person shooter based on John Wick to head-mounted displays (HMD). The game will be based on the world and characters from the action movie, though no footage has been released so far. Development team Grab, which has mobile games and VR experience, will spearhead the development. Starbreeze will be publishing the product across multiple VR platforms. The film’s producer Basil Iwanyk and his production team will be collaborating WEVR and Grab on the game.[blockquote cite=”Peter Levin, Lionsgate” type=”left”]”John Wick is the perfect cross-platform property to extend into the fast-growing gaming world, and we believe that a cutting edge VR game will deepen fan engagement and accelerate John Wick’s evolution into one of our next big action franchises” [/blockquote]

It’s unclear at this point if John Wick star Keanu Reeves will be reprising the title role.

Demo versions of the John Wick VR game will be available to try later this year via SteamVR, before a full release early in the next year. Starbreeze’s mega-popular heist shooter Payday 2 will also see further John Wick DLC – the main character was previously added to the game via a free update last October.

The John Wick game will release at some point in 2016. SteamVR demos will become available near the start of the year, with John Wick 2 not far behind. In case, you missed it, watch the official John Wick movie trailer below:
