Philips has brought in a new technology that is sure to be a hit among heavy users of smartphones. The company has just launched SoftBlue display smart phones that are supposed to reduce the strain that sharp displays tend to put on one’s eyes.
What causes the strain?
The glare form most electronic displays including televisions, computer screens and smart phones are not just responsible for causing strain on one’s eyes but is also a major cause of eye fatigue which further leads to bothersome headaches. According to eizo.com 99% of the ultraviolet rays that reach the Earth are UVA with a wavelength of 315 – 400nm. Although blue light is part of the visible spectrum, it still has an influence on eye fatigue. Prolonged exposure to blue light also causes macular degeneration.
Keeping that in mind, the new SoftBlue technology from Philips promises to reduce the amount of blue light from its displays and thus cause less strain on one’s eyes. The two new models that Philips has launched incorporate this new display. Sapphire S616 and Sapphire Life V787 are the two models which are also a part of the company’s mid range offering. Both the models support HD display with a resolution of 1080 X 1920 pixels. These two models promise to reduce the blue light by up to 86% which can reduce the fatigue that human eyes are subjected to with prolonged exposure to electronic displays.
Most other smart phone manufacturers are expected to follow suit or develop their own technologies in the same direction. If what Philips claims is true, this is sure to boost their sales to a great extent and Philips may very soon be competing with the giants of the smart phone world. However, in the meanwhile, for those using other smart phones, you can try dimming your display. Dim displays are known to cause lesser strain on the eyes and thus cause lesser fatigue.
