AI is short for Artificial Intelligence which enables people to use electronic personal assistants like Microsoft’s Cortana or Google Now. Apple’s Siri also works using the same principle. Artificial Intelligence is the technology behind facebook recognizing and auto tagging friends in images. It is also the crux behind new technological developments like self driving cars, etc. Google now wants to set standards for research on development of Artificial Intelligence.
Google aims at doing so by releasing a program called TensorFlow as an open – source software, freely available to all for download, development and use. With this, Google seeks to influence how people design, test and run artificial intelligence systems. Google, in spite of spending several years in developing its Artificial Intelligence software, is giving it away for free, as it believes that by being open, they can encourage talented individuals to work for them. Google hopes that making this software available as an open source, will also entice the wider community of developers to work on new Artificial Intelligence technologies.
Not only Google, but even Facebook inc. and Microsoft Corp. are seeking to influence development of Artificial Intelligence technologies by publishing research papers and making presentations in conferences. They are also trying to get talented people to work for them by guest lecturing at university campuses across the world. By releasing TensorFlow as an open – source software, Google is taking a step towards encouraging developers to download and modify the code as per their own requirements.
By getting the mass involved into developing and testing artificial intelligence technology, Google wants to get into the crux of what people want or expect from such technology. At the same time, Google can benefit by enticing young and talented developers to work for them, not just on Artificial Intelligence, but on a host of other technological advancements which it hopes to make in the future.
