Beware competitors: WhatsApp will soon take over with the new video calling feature

WhatsApp Messenger is a widely used cross-platform mobile messaging app. It allows you to exchange messages without any charges. The voice calling facility announced by WhatsApp this year is soon going to be followed by video calling feature. The plan is to include a video calling facility to the list of features it already has and as per the sources the feature is already in the testing stage for WhatsApp’s iOS version 2.12.16.2. But,when will WhatsApp launch it, is still not known. With more than 900 million users using WhatsApp, it has now become as big as its parent company – Facebook. Facebook messenger already supports video calling and hence it is a necessity to add it to WhatsApp too.

WhatsApp faces competition from many service providers like Google Hangouts, Microsoft’s Skype etc. So in order to please their customers, WhatsApp has decided to take up the challenge. When the new feature of video calling gets in, WhatsApp shall be regarded as an all-rounder. Some images from various internet sources show that a new video chat icon will be added and there will be a provision to switch between front and the back camera as per user convenience. Users can mute a call, switch between cameras with this new version which will be rolled out soon in the market. This will definitely prove to be a competition to other popular video chat applications.

WhatsApp will also introduce a ‘multi-tab user interface’ option which will allow user to switch between chats without having to go back to the main chat screen. This is an amazing feature and will give the user a more convenient and an easier chattingenvironment. There is lack of clarity even on 3G network. So there is a lot of curiosity as to how video calling feature will be able to overcome this handicap.

  1. What about that end-to-end encryption WhatsApp promised some months ago? Sure, you can use apps like Threema and Wickr if you care about security, but instead of introducing new features, WhatsApp should make sure the existing ones are safe.
