Will PlayStation VR cost more than Oculus Rift?

Oculus Rift, the much awaited virtual reality headset faced an outrage over its pricing. Now Sony is launching a new PlayStation VR (PS VR) device at a higher price than that of Oculus Rift.  Forbes found that the headset was listed on Amazon Canada for CAD 1,125.35 which is equal to INR 53,330 or US $ 800. This would mean that PS VR costs US $200 more than the Oculus Rift which was very expensive as per people.

While speaking to Bloomberg, Andrew House, Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, during the Tokyo Game Show 2015, did not reveal the exact cost of PS VR but said that the costing will be roughly same as that of as a new gaming platform. With this statement it can be easily be predicted that the price would be in the range of INR 25,350 which is equivalent to US $400. PS4 (PlayStation 4) at the launch was priced around INR 39,990 in India and hence same price range can be expected for the device.

The price was removed from the listing on Amazon Canada and Sony told Forbes that it was an error at Amazon’s end and no price was declared by them. During the launch of Oculus Rift, Palmer Luckey, Oculus co-founder also had suggested that the price range would be around US $ 200 to US $ 400 and we are aware how that turned out. It won’t be a surprise if the pricing of PlayStation VR is as mentioned in Amazon Canada listing. Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios at Paris Games Week claimed that more than 200 developers are working on PS VR games. How many games make it to the launch line-up as per 2016 release window is yet to be seen.
