Next Google Nexus phone may have iPhone 6S’ 3D Touch display technology

It seems that iPhone 6S’ 3D Touch display will become a common feature for Android smart phones by next year, courtesy the 2016 Google Nexus smart phone. According to a report by GizmoChina, HTC – which is said to be manufacturing the next Nexus handset – will be using a 3D Touch-like pressure sensitive display technology in the 2016 Google smart phone. Citing industry insiders, the report says Google plans to make the feature a standard for Android. But the Google-HTC pair isn’t the only to be working on this technology. GizmoChina says Chinese smart phone brands like Xiaomi, Meizu, Oppo and Vivo are also working on handsets with pressure-sensitive displays.

Huawei’s Mate S, Gionee’s S8 and ZTE’s Axon Mini already have 3D Touch-like display panels, while Meizu’s upcoming MX6 smart phone is also rumoured to have the same. The problem, so far, for Android devices with pressure-sensitive displays has been the lack of support from app developers across the board. Huawei and ZTE have been able to make use of the feature only in the apps they have pre-installed on their respective handsets. With Google joining the bandwagon, developers are likely to integrate support for the feature in their apps and make it more useful on Android.

Google Nexus is a line of consumer electronic devices that run the Android operating system. Google manages the design, development, marketing, and support of these devices, but some development and all manufacturing are carried out by partnering original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). As of November 2015, the phones currently available in the line are the Nexus 6P (made with Huawei), the Nexus 5X (made with LG), and the Nexus 6 (made with Motorola Mobility); in addition to the Nexus 9 tablet (made with HTC) and a streaming media player Nexus Player (made with Asus).
