Twitter is going to stick with its signature 140-character limit, said its chief executive Jack Dorsey. Dorsey said that the 140-character limit is part of Twitter’s identity and they cannot let it go so easily. Dorsey affirmed the same on the Today Show on Friday. He was there to celebrate Twitter’s 10th anniversary this month. On March 21, 2006, Dorsey sent Twitter’s first tweet. There were many rumors that Twitter would increase its character limit in an effort to increase the number of users. But, many users complained that by doing so the essence of Twitter will be lost. The act would undermine the quick, free-flowing, real-time culture audience.

In the interview, Dorsey stood by the company’s assertion that Twitter does not censor its users or hide any wrong content till the time it has been adhering to the company’s community standards. Twitter’s always been about controls, people can follow whoever they want. And it’s our job to make sure they see the most important things and the things that matter to them, affirmed Dorsey. He affirmed that there are tweets that promote violence and it is completely against the terms of service of social network. Therefore, people have controls to block and have controls to mute.

It has also come into notice that Twitter has been trying to make its use easier. Twitter has added new features like the digest-like “Moments” and a recent option to have algorithms choosing the order of tweets in users’ timeline. So far, these changes have not derived desired results.
