Huawei Developing Its Own Mobile OS to Reduce Reliance on Android: Report

According to a new report, the Chinese smart phone manufacturer Huawei, in order to reduce its reliance on Google’s Android was said to be building their own mobile operating system. Amir Efrati of The Information reports that the Chinese company is secretly developing an alternative mobile operating system, citing three people briefed about the project.

It is claimed in the report that the project is in its early days and ex employees from Nokia are also included in the project. The former Apple creative director, Abigail Brody, who was last year hired by Huawei, as the chief user experience designer, did not comment on the new OS but she did point out that she was going to meet the team in August. Currently very little details related to the new OS from Huawei are available. The report also states that the company’s Emotion UI which is said to be built on top of Android OS will have several changes introduced in it by Abigail Brody. Though he did not reveal the actual changes he hinted that the new Emotion UI version that will be released in the fall will deal with glaring cosmetic issues and pain points.

Ofcourse,  Brody’s most important task is to reduce the elements that makes it look like iOS and make the newer Emotion UI version look more like Android’s Material Design. The new EMUI will most probably come with new icons, fresh colours, and additional features like an app drawer. 9 to 5 google in a separate report independently claims that the new EMUI will look closer to the stock Nexus smart phone experience with some Huawei-made elements added. The move is reminiscent of Samsung’s attempt with Tizen, as well as Amazon’s decision to use its Android-based Fire OS for its tablet devices.
