It was announced earlier that that the world’s cheapest smart phone would be available from June 30, but on Wednesday the company said that from July 6, the delivery of the world’s cheapest smart phone at INR 251 which is less than $4 will finally begin. The company also said that they are trying to meet Narendra Modi, who is our Prime Minister so that under the Make in India initiative they can acquire his support.

Goel told IANS that in the meanwhile, we have prepared a letter requesting a meeting with our Prime Minister to pitch our case as a domestic smart phone maker which wishes to contribute towards ‘Make in India’ initiative. We are planning to organise a launch event in the capital on July 7, a day after starting the delivery. Goel had announced earlier while giving an interview to IANS, that June 30 would be the date for delivery. He had also said that once the first phase of delivery of two lakh phones is completed , he would open the registration again for those who were interested to buy the smart phone.

This year in mid-February the company had planned that before June 30 they would deliver 2.5 lakh smart phones. But they received over seven crore registrations and within three days their payment gateway crashed. Goel had told IANS that we learned from our mistakes and decided to go silent till we come out with the product. Now we have a 4-inch, dual-SIM phone ready for delivery. I feel vindicated. He also said that we will have a loss, but I am happy that the dream of connecting rural and poor Indians as part of the ‘Digital India’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives has been fulfilled with Freedom 25.
