Apple aired its latest iPad Air 2 ad on Oscar Sunday to remind filmmakers that the iPad is a powerful filmmaking tool. The 1-minute long commercial features voiceover by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese and centers on young people using the iPad to film themselves creating art.
The commercial, which features excerpts from Martin Scorsese’s commencement speech to the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Class of 2014, chronicles the efforts of students from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts who were given iPads to write, produce, shoot, score, and edit their films in a matter of days. [blockquote cite=”Martin Scorsese” type=”left”]”For your work, for your passion, every day is a rededication. Painters, dancers, actors, writers, filmmakers, it’s the same for all of you, for all of us. Every step is a first step, every brush stroke is a test, every scene is a lesson, every shot is a school. So, let the learning continue.”[/blockquote]
The ad is accompanied by a website highlighting specific stories of the iPad being used to make movies. The website also discusses key video planning, filming, and editing applications for the iPad such as Final Draft, Garageband (but not the consumer-focused iMovie), and VideoGrade.
This isn’t the first awards show this year that Apple has used to tout the creative prowess of the iPad Air. A music-themed ad, “Change,” was unveiled during the Grammys earlier this month.
But the iPad wasn’t the only Apple star at the Oscars; company co-founder Steve Wozniak played a part in a Cadillac commercial.
