Apps of the Google Play family get new icons

Google received a major revamp last year which saw the creation of two new tabs, Apps & Games and Entertainment. Google has made it public that its entire family of such applications, including the two mentioned above is going to receive a refreshed new look with updated icons. The app icons are the first thing that one notices about an app and therefore play a huge role in the mentality of the users. Experts opine that the icons play a role that’s larger than the stress laid on the user interface. The reason is simple – the icon greets you first when you wish to use the app and only then you can experience the UI it has to offer.

The new icons will all be consistent as far as their looks are concerned so that the Google family of apps is quite easily distinguished. Jonathan Chung, Visual Design Lead, Google Play, confirmed about the update through a blog post. He also announced that users worldwide will be able to see the new icons in their devices and online in the coming weeks. Google Play, Google Movies and TV, Play Books, Play Music, Play Games and Play Newsstand are the applications that are all set to receive the visual update from Google.

The biggest change was noted in the icon for the Play Music app, which will no longer don the headphones and will instead sport a simple music note and will be dominated by Orange color. The basic look of the icons of the other apps will be similar to that of the previous generation with just a few changes here and there to maintain the consistency that Google is seeking. Since launching Google Play four years ago, we’ve always had dedicated apps in addition to the Google Play store. Today, all our icons are getting an update to provide a consistent look across the entire family of Play apps, said Chung.
