Will Google Name its Next Android Version Neyyappam?
We find a pattern in the history of the Android mobile operating system. Their first two mobiles were named Alpha and Beta and the others were named after confectionery that is Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop and lastly Marshmallow. The only exception was seen in version 4.4, which was called KitKat, which is a chocolate brand.
During his recent visit to India, CEO Sundar Pichai, of Google, had to face one prominent question namely, Will Android name its next version after an Indian dessert? This question stumped Pichai and he said that he would consult his mother and then answer the question. Therefore on May 18 when Google went live with a link asking suggestions from all over the world to help them name their latest version of Android, they received thousands of suggestions. However maximum suggestors requested the name Neyyappam. This link of suggesting a name closes on June 8. After receiving so many common request, we find the Neyyappam name continuously appearing on the site.
Many believe that if Google accepts the name Neyyappam then Android N, become Android Neyyappam. Giving a desi name will also tend to attract more users in a country which already has more than 60 million Android users. Thus it will also be a good marketing ploy. Acceptance of the suggested name will also be profitable for Kerala. Seeing an immense marketing potential, the Kerala Tourism director U.V. Jose said, a Google click on Neyyappam will inevitably lead to Kerala. He added that we shall turn the local delicacy into a global campaign tool in the little time we have. Malayalis have a popular saying on the snack that is Neyyappam thinnal randundu karyam meaning eating Neyyappam has twin gains. That is A win for Google, and another one for Kerala.
