It could be killing you slowly with its radiation all day, but as this lucky American figured, it saved his life for him to die another day. Confirmed as injured in the New Year’s eve attack on a nightclub in Istanbul, William Jacob Raak was one of the 600 people inside the club when the ghastly attack took place.
In an attack for which the ISIS has taken responsibility, a gunman entered the club at around 1:15 AM local time and opened fire at will. As many as 39 innocent lives were lost, while 70 people have been reportedly injured. William, who was there with a group of nine other people, was shot in the hip. The bullet somehow hit his phone and then traveled towards his knee. Doctors then confirmed that the cellphone diverted the bullet from hitting William’s artery, which would’ve proved fatal.
William said he laid on the floor of the nightclub and played dead as the gunman moved through the bloody scene. He described himself as “probably the luckiest person in the whole thing.” William, who was in Istanbul to celebrate his birthday, is one of the lucky few who experienced rebirth after the attack. The gunman responsible for the attack is still at large, as Turkey has launched a manhunt to pin him down.
