Hip hop singer and producer Dr. Dre took to his Beats 1 radio show The Pharmacy to confirm reports of a Straight Outta Compton soundtrack produced by him as well as additional details regarding his first LP since 1999’s 2001. During Saturday’s “Countdown to Compton” episode, Dre revealed that Compton: A Soundtrack will arrive on August 7th exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music.
Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, the Game and many more will feature on the 16-track LP. In case you didn’t know, Straight Outta Compton is a Hollywood film that details his rise in the music industry along with members of one of the genre’s most well-known hardcore groups.
“I was leaving the set, going to the studio, and I felt myself just being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album,” he said. “I kept it under wraps, and now the album is finished. It’s an ‘inspired-by’ album, it’s inspired by Straight Outta Compton.”
Compton: A Soundtrack comes on the heels of the wait for Detox, Dre’s long-gestating follow-up to 1999’s The Chronic 2001. After releasing singles such as “Kush” and “I Need a Doctor“, and teasing a February 2011 release, nothing happened. Last summer, reports emerged that Dre had dropped the Detox name entirely. Now, Dre has revealed that he scrapped Detox because he was not happy with it: “I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good. The record, it just wasn’t good. … I worked my ass off on it, and I don’t think I did a good enough job.”
