It is a known fact that greenhouse gases absorb and store the sun’s radiation which transforms into heat and gives a fillip to global warming. Global warming is a serious issue which, if remains uncontrolled, can cause natural disasters that will be sufficient to wipe out entire life from this planet. Rising sea levels, melting glaciers are all a result of global warming. According to a new study, Earth’s soil has the capability to prevent such a catastrophe. According to the paper, the soil has the capability to store an extra 8 billion tones of greenhouse gases and thus contribute significantly at reducing the average temperature across the globe.

According to the study, if every country adopts latest technologies towards sustainable land use practices, more and more emissions can be stored in farmland and other natural wild spaces, which can play a significant role in curbing global warming. According to the study, sustainable agriculture practices like growing crops with deeper root systems and using charcoal based composts can help soils retain the equivalent of around four fifths of annual emissions that are released by the burning of fossil fuel worldwide. That is a very high number and if this can be practiced with other alternate measures that reduce emission, the concept of global warming can be a thing of the past.
Earth’s soils not only holds the key to control global warming, but if certain measures are followed, could help earth regain the earlier talked about variety of flora and fauna. This could also put on track the rectification of the ecological balance that has been abused by mankind over years. The paper also claims that the role that soils can play in efforts to combat climate change has been largely overlooked due to a lack of effective monitoring tools.
