Elon Musk Plans Massive Supercomputer for AI Startup xAI

Tech mogul Elon Musk has unveiled plans to build a massive supercomputer, dubbed the “gigafactory of compute,” to support his artificial intelligence startup, xAI. According to a report by The Information, Musk aims to have this supercomputer operational by the fall of 2025, integrating 100,000 Nvidia chips.

During a recent presentation to investors, Musk emphasized his dedication to completing the project on time. The proposed supercomputer is expected to be “at least four times the size of the largest GPU clusters currently in existence,” surpassing even those used by Meta for AI model training.

Since the launch of OpenAI’s generative AI tool, ChatGPT, in 2022, the AI field has seen intense competition among major players like Microsoft, Google, Meta, and startups such as Anthropic and Stability AI. Musk stands out as one of the few investors with the financial clout to challenge AI giants like OpenAI, Google, and Meta.

xAI is currently developing Grok, a chatbot designed to access real-time information from X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which Musk also owns.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, later expressing concerns over the company’s shift towards profitability under CEO Sam Altman. In March, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it had deviated from its original non-profit mission of making AI research universally accessible. OpenAI has dismissed the lawsuit, attributing Musk’s stance to dissatisfaction following his departure.

In a recent interview at the Viva Tech event, Musk, known for his unconventional and provocative comments, sparked amusement and curiosity. When the host joked that some people think Musk might be an alien, he responded affirmatively, saying, “I am an alien.” This playful yet cryptic remark has left audiences buzzing, with Musk promising to share proof on social media.
