Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Pinterest and Twitter accounts were allegedly hacked, and a hacking group claims to have found his credentials in the leaked LinkedIn cache. It seems like a great time to change one’s LinkedIn password. Why now, you may ask. Well, it may be recalled that the recent fallout from the company’s 2012 breach, when the social network for professionals revealed that many more users had been affected than it was previously reported. A whopping 117 million credentials were feared to have been leaked, as opposed to the reported 6.5 million.

Hacking group OurMine Team boasted of its exploits via Zuckerberg’s own official Pinterest and Twitter accounts. The offending posts have already been removed, and the OurMine Team Twitter account has also been suspended. The hacking group also claimed responsibility of having hacked Zuckerberg’s Instagram account. This can be very embarrassing for the Facebook CEO, if found true. After all, Facebook owns Instagram. However, a Facebook spokesperson refuted the Instagram hack to VentureBeat. He said, No Facebook systems or accounts were accessed. The affected accounts have been re-secured.
The incident only serves to emphasize the importance best practices in online security. They are simple ones that can go a long way in preventing misuse of numerous accounts. Experts suggest that using a reputed password manager may be the best and most convenient answer, users should also utilize a strong password and also change their passwords frequently. It is advisable to assign different passwords to different accounts. It is especially necessary in the case of one’s central email ID that’s often associated with other accounts, including banking.
