Facebook user base crosses 142 million user benchmark in India

Facebook, a Networking giant has more than 142 million users in India. Over 133 million users are accessing the social media platform through their mobile phones. More than 69 million people in India are using Facebook daily. 64 million among this access the platform through their mobile devices. After US, India is the next largest market for Facebook. Facebook is a US-based firm which reported 1.59 billion monthly active users at the end of December 2015. Vijay Shankar, Facebook head of Products (Facebook Lite) while in a talk revealed that the product Facebook Lite has crossed the 100-million-userbase mark globally in a span of just nine months since the launch. Facebook Lite is a smaller size app and is offering access to Facebook consuming less data.

He said, a strong uptake in markets of India, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, and Philippines was the main reason for the growth of Facebook. According to him Facebook Lite has crossed 100 million monthly active users in a period of less than nine months since the launch of the product. Hence, it is the fastest growing version of Facebook that has reached the milestone. The new product has been rolled out in more than 150 countries through Asia, America, Africa and parts of Europe. The product was launched in the month of July in the last year.

The prime objective behind building the product was to use less data and work well despite of constrained telecom networks, especially in developing countries. The product supports more than 50 languages and consumes less than 1 MB space. He also disclosed that there will be new features that will be added to Facebook Lite. Some of the features are multiple photo uploads,support for video, pinch-to-zoom for photos, emojis, and many other exciting features are been added to the product.
