Fastest growing smart phone vendors Lenovo, Apple

It is  found that Lenovo and Apple are the fastest growing vendors. Canalys states that the Indian smart phone grew 12 percent year-on-year in terms of shipments. In comparision Samsung, Micromax, Intex, Lenovo and Lava the market remained the same. , Lenovo experienced the largest growth – its shipments rose 63 percent year-on-year. The report assigns Lenovo’s massive growth to its value-for-money handsets and offline channel strategy. They also said that in terms of shipments Microsoft, BlackBerry, Sony, and LG were the biggest losers in market as they were unable to compete with the low cost handsets which is the current trend in the market. Micromax on the other hand experienced a slight drop in market share of 16.7 percent. In terms of shipments Apple was on the number 8 position but it experienced the second largest growth behind Lenovo.

Canalys states that in devices priced above INR 20,000 Samsung’s market share deplete from 66 percent to 41 percent while Apple’s market share grew from 11 percent to 29 percent in the same period. Due to numerous price cuts over the year iPhone 5s became the most popular Apple device in the Indian market. They believe that very soon vendors will start getting financing to help boost overall affordability of their products, and ensure their growth. In India Apple is outperforming and still has great growth potential says Canalys. But its growth run could be short-lived says Mobility Analyst Wilmer Ang.

A Research analyst at Canalys, Ishan Dutt says that over the past 18 months, India’s smart phone market has seen dramatic changes due to numerous reasons like rise of online channels, the arrival of new international vendors particularly from China, the move to LTE and the desire for higher-quality devices. All these had a big impact. Particularly Micromax has been through tough times due to key executives leaving. They are tryingto restore its strategy to incorporate an ecosystem of services around payments and content.
