Nextbit started its journey as a crowd funded project on the Kickstarter platform, managing to reach its first goal of raising $500,000 within 12 hours. It then went on to attract an amount of $1.3 million within a span of two weeks and eventually came out with products like the Robin.
With a USP of providing cloud based storage for for users of its smartphones, the company has now been acquired by gaming giant Razer. While the amount for which Nextbit has been acquired stays undisclosed, its employees and assets will be absorbed by the new parent company. On its blog, the phone maker announced, “Nextbit will operate as an independent division inside Razer, focused on unique mobile design and experiences. To put it simply, we’ll be doing exactly what we’ve been doing all along, only bigger and better.“
For users who’ve bought the Nextbit Robin, promised warranties will be entertained for the next six months, while support in the form of software updates and security patches will keep trickling until February 2018. However, sales of new devices and accessories have been stopped. So if you’ve fancied that Robin and were ready to get one for yourself, start looking at alternatives.
Nextbit’s new parent, Razer Inc is an American company founded by Min-Liang Tang and Robert Krakoff. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, it specializes in products marketed specifically to gamers. Razer is a popular name in the gamer community and is dedicated to the creation and development of products mainly focused on PC gaming such as laptops, tablet computer, peripherals, wearables, and accessories.
