All Star Trek fans will remember how the captain and the crew used their lapel pins to interact with the artificial intelligence and crew onboard the Star Trek Enterprise. Google has finally managed to create a prototype of a similar device uses a microphone which listens to the user’s voice and Bluetooth technology to send those commands to other device with which it has to be paired. The device can be worn on the chest and users can activate it with a light tap on it. The device can also get back to the user with the result of the query using a built in speaker or through headphones.

One can imagine how far Google is willing to go to explore the field of search. This device can be extremely convenient for those wanting to search the internet for answers to their queries but are too lazy to fish out their smart phones from their pockets. With further development, other devices could also be connected to the lapel pin, thus expanding its capabilities. In fact any device which has Bluetooth technology will be able to receive orders and execute programs when given through the lapel pin.

With Google simultaneously working on improving its artificial intelligence system, which also makes it adept at understanding natural language, this device does seem like a necessity for all in the future. With such a device, one can take multi tasking to new heights and involve several devices together too. The lapel pin is still in the testing phase though and the company did not give any time frame regarding its availability in the market or its expected price range.

Amit Singhal – senior vice president and executive in charge of the firm’s search initiatives, was quoted as saying to Time – I always wanted that pin. You just ask it anything and it works. That’s why we were like, let’s go prototype that and see how it feels.
