This week Google released its Android security update for the month of June and thereby kept its promise of monthly security updates. Now the security updates of Nexus devices are available with the help of an over the air known as OTA update. It is noted by Google that the latest Nexus firmware images have also been released on the Google Developer site. Also it is seen that Samsung as part of monthly security maintenance release known as SMR process has also come out with its June security update for major flagship models.
Google says that within the next 48 hours they will be releasing the source code patches for the new issues to the Android Open Source Project that is AOSP. Google notes that on May 2nd partner OEMs were notified about the issues which were described in the June bulletin. Google says that the latest build MTC19V is available for the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X; the MOB30M build is available for the Nexus 6, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, Nexus 9 LTE; Nexus 5; Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 7 3G, and MXC89H for the Pixel C. From Google’s Nexus Factory Images page users can manually download and flash the zip update file for the Nexus devices.
The latest June update takes care of the six vulnerabilities that had been flagged as critical by Google, it also included 11 vulnerabilities that fell in the spectrum of high severity. Also the company had pointed out four moderate security glitches that have also been taken care of. Out of the six, four critical vulnerabilities listed by Google in the June security bulletin are related to Qualcomm drivers. The critical security vulnerabilities that Google has fixed include remote code execution vulnerability in mediaserver, remote code execution vulnerabilities in libwebm, elevation of privilege vulnerability in Qualcomm video driver, elevation of privilege vulnerability in Qualcomm sound driver, elevation of privilege vulnerability in Qualcomm GPU driver, and elevation of privilege vulnerability in Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver.
