Google has begun distributing the latest Android 14 September security patch for its Pixel 9 series and earlier Pixel models. While this update doesn’t bring any new features, it addresses several high-risk security vulnerabilities that could expose devices to cyber threats if left unresolved. The timing of this update coincides with Google’s announcement of the upcoming Android 15 release, which will soon make its debut on Pixel handsets.
Android 14 September Patch: Critical Security Fixes
The newly released security patch, detailed in Google’s September Pixel Update bulletin, tackles multiple vulnerabilities of varying severity. Among the most urgent fixes is the resolution of a critical vulnerability, CVE-2024-32896, which has reportedly been exploited in a limited, targeted fashion. In the patch notes, Google states that the update “fixes critical bugs and improves the performance and security of your device,” underscoring the importance of keeping devices protected from potential attacks.
The Android 14 patch, dated September 1, resolves 11 security issues, while a second patch dated September 5 increases the total number of fixes to 36. These patches collectively enhance the security framework of Pixel devices, making them more resilient against potential intrusions.
Supported Pixel Devices and OTA Availability
The over-the-air (OTA) update for eligible Pixel smartphones, including the latest Pixel 9 series, has already started rolling out. Staff at Gadgets 360 confirmed the patch’s availability on Pixel devices. In addition to OTA updates, Google has also made factory images available for manual installation.
The following Pixel models are eligible for the Android 14 September security patch:
- Pixel 6 series
- Pixel 7 series
- Pixel 8 series
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel 9 series
However, Google has announced that the Pixel 5a has reached the end of its support lifecycle and will no longer receive security updates, including the current Android 14 patch.
Android 15: A New Chapter for Pixel Devices
Alongside the Android 14 patch, Google has officially unveiled Android 15, releasing its source code through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This enables developers to modify the operating system and create custom versions for a variety of devices. The latest version of Android is set to roll out on supported Pixel phones in the coming weeks.
Following the Pixel rollout, other major smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, Oppo, and OnePlus, are expected to push Android 15 updates to their eligible devices in the coming months, ushering in a new era of Android enhancements and features.
While the Android 14 September patch focuses on critical security fixes, Google’s ongoing development of Android 15 signals the company’s commitment to evolving the Android ecosystem, blending enhanced security with the next generation of mobile innovation.
