A while ago, Kodak had launched their very first smartphone, the Kodak IM5. For its time, the phone had enough hardware that could easily keep it in the competition for some time but that didn’t happen. The IM5 managed to impress just a handful of customers. It features 5inch HD display and was powered by a 1.7GHz Octa-core MediaTek SoC coupled with 1GB of RAM. 8GB of internal storage for offered that could be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. Its camera setup was supposed to be its USP that comprised of a 13MP unit at the rear and a 5MP camera at the front.
Well, Kodak is not worried about the letdown of their past and here the team who made the IM5 is back with another smartphone! This one has a lot riding on it as it is said to be the modern interpretation of their very own iconic camera of the 1940s. This is the all new Kodak Ektra smartphone!
Taking cues from the Ektra camera, the Ektra smartphone is a photography centric smartphone that is claimed to be able to deliver a professional quality output. The design of the phone is similar to the consumer point-and-shoot cameras with a leather finish on the back and a Horizontal Two Step Shutter Release placed ergonomically. The retro fit and feel adds to the bulk but never mind the phone is not here to impress by looks. On the front is a 5inch Full HD IPS display with a pixel density of 441 ppi. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.
The optics setup includes 21MP main camera equipped with a Kodak non-reflective lens coating and an aperture of f/2.0. It gets a Steel rimmed lens and the has a special protection layer installed on it. The lens is benefitted from Optical Image Stabilization and Auto Focus. This rear camera is capable of recording 4K videos. For professional photography purposes, the camera UI has been bumped up with a host of intuitive features and adjustments that includes a touchscreen DSLR Dial with haptic touch.
The customizable manual mode allows users to manually adjust that shutter speed and ISO rating. Users can also make the best out of the camera due to an extensive scene mode selection option. The front facing camera is a 13MP unit equipped with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) & HDR Imaging capabilities.
Powering the Kodak Ektra is a MediaTek Helio X-20 Decacore Processor (that employs 2x Cortex-A72 at 2.1GHz ~ 2.3GHz, 4x Cortex-A53 at 1.85GHz, and 4x Cortex-A53 at 1.4GHz). The RAM offered is 3GB and the internal memory stands at 32GB memory which can be expanded via MicroSD cards. The Kodak Ektra is packed with a 3,000 mAh battery.
