This year, Xiaomi has launched many smartphones in India and abroad to expand their presence in almost every segment of the business. The Redmis ruled the low-end budget category while the Mi phones including the Mi Max, Mi5s held the fort in the mid-range and the premium segment. This year till date, Xiaomi has already launched over 10 products globally and with just 2 months to go for the end of 2016, the company is still not done yet. While this well-spread product range is already making good sales numbers, Xiaomi has launched another mind-boggling product to take the game a notch higher.
Presenting the bezel-less Xiaomi Mi Mix, insanely gorgeous and incredibly stunning! Not like we have never seen a bezel-less phone before it’s just that when Xiaomi does it, they have so many details to garnish the product with, that the whole deal looks more impressive. Other bezel-less that have tried to make a mark in the past were from brands like ZTE, Elephone, and Sharp. The design and construction of the Aquos Xx from Sharp is similar to the Mi Mix’s.
French designer, Philippe Starck, has contributed to the design of the Mi Mix. The company and the designer together have followed a new design philosophy – Less material, more humanity.
The smarty-phone will be available in two versions, on being the Mi Mix and the other being the Mi Mix exclusive. It’s kind of strange as to why the company would call this one Mix instead of something that will go with its ‘Mystique’ characteristics. Maybe somebody from the core team suggested to call it the Mi ‘X’ and then got interpreted as the Mix. Anyway, the Exclusive edition will get more RAM, Storage, and some 18k gold plated ornaments!
The front face is just the huge 6.4inch screen surrounded with a slight bezel on three sides and underlined with a chin with a suitable thickness. The construction is so neat that once held in the hand it seems that user is just holding the display in his or her hand. The FullHD screen gets 17:9 display aspect ratio and 362 PPi. At 209gms the whole body of the Mi Mix has been crafted out of ceramic. The ceramic parts include the front panel, the back cover, frame, and buttons. In addition to that, the exclusive edition will get 18k gold plated rings on the fingerprint sensor and rear camera module.
To achieve the bezel-less treatment the engineers had to make changes to some of the systems including the earpiece and the proximity sensor. The earpiece has been replaced with a Cantilever type Piezoelectric ceramic acoustic system that is said to provide a better performance than the conventional setup. The proximity sensor has been swapped with an Ultrasound Distance sensor. Also, the front facing 5MP camera unit has been placed on the right-hand side bottom of the frame. The primary shooter is a 16 MP unit with F 2.0 aperture, PDAF and 4k video recording capabilities.
Powering the dual sim Mi Mix is the Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 processor coupled with Adreno 530 GPU. The CPU employs a Quad-core (2 x 2.35 GHz Kryo & 2 x 1.6 GHz Kryo) chip. The regular Mi Max gets 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and the offered internal storage is of 128GB whereas the exclusive edition gets 6GB LPDDR4 of RAM and 256 GB of onboard memory. The Mi Mix benefits from Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Miui 8 on top. The feature set of the Mi Mix includes improved Fast charge 3.0, NFC brush bus card, USB Type-C port, Dual Nano-SIM card slot, and a fingerprint sensor. All of the above-mentioned hardware is power by a 4400mAh no removable battery.
Xiaomi provides a leather case, power adapter, USB Type-C cable, sim removal tool, and documentation with the phone. The 4GB RAM version is priced at RMB 3,499 (approx INR 34,500 or USD 515) and the 6GB RAM version is priced at RMB 3,999 (approx INR 39,500 or USD 590). Reportedly, Xiaomi will not launch the Mi Mix outside China as the company has stated that with the Mi Mix, they are just focusing on their customers in China.
