Telltale Games, developer of The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands, have dropped the first trailer for the upcoming Minecraft: Story Mode video game at the ongoing Minecon event in London, and our initial scepticism is now giving way to reluctant acceptance.
Like other games from the developer, Minecraft: Story Mode is a narrative driven game with great characters, meant to be played more like a point-and-click game than a traditional action title. It also features a pretty strong cast, led by comedian Patton Oswalt, who is joined by Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Paul Reubens and Billy West.
According to Telltale’s blog, players will control protagonist Jesse throughout the season, portrayed by Oswalt. Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order are the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.
Announced in December 2014, Minecraft: Story Mode has been developed primarily by Telltale Games, in collaboration with Minecraft creator Mojang, now owned by Microsoft. Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft franchise for $2.5 billion. Following the deal, Minecraft creator and Mojang founder Markus “Notch” Persson exited the company. Addressing the visual style of Telltale’s series, Mojang has said Story Mode “won’t look exactly like Minecraft,” but will “feel authentic in its own special way.”
“Telltale’s series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community and the game that continues to inspire a generation,” Mojang said.
The trailer for Minecraft: Story Mode wasn’t the only significant announcement to come out of Minecon 2015. Mojang also revealed that a beta version of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition is set for release on July 29th and will be available for free to anyone who already owns Minecraft on PC. Other players can buy it for the first time during the beta period for just $10.
Minecraft: Story Mode is coming out later this year on Android, iOS, Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
