Here’s your first glimpse of Microsoft’s upcoming Project Spartan browser

This week has been a leaky one for Microsoft’s Windows 10 for phones, but the same source has also now released a host of images of Microsoft’s all new Project Spartan web browser.

The screenshots, with Chinese text, were first posted on the Chinese site ITHome. The Project Spartan browser is part of the Windows 10 OS, and was first previewed by Microsoft last month. Any Microsoft development partner can have access to the latest Build 10009 of Windows 10 Technical Preview and the accompanying browser, which is apparently how the screenshots emerged.

The screenshots a bit of the user interface, the search bar, tabs, bookmarks, layout, plugins and more. Browser features shown in the images include a favorites menu, a reading list, and reading mode for long articles and PDFs, all of which have already been previewed by Microsoft. The browser is also scheduled to have Cortana integration and the ability to annotate web pages, among other features.

Project Spartan is aiming to become the best browser for the PC, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it ported to Windows Phone, and even Android and iOS later on. As Internet Explorer is more infamous than famous due to lack of features and stability, Project Spartan will surely draw attention to both the new browser, as well as the upcoming Windows 10.

Once Windows 10 is ready later this summer, Spartan should also make an appearance as the next-generation browser that takes the best from Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and slaps it together into one great browser. At least that’s what Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO thinks and hopes.
