Is Google planning to sell a wireless phone service?

As if autonomous cars and space mapping weren’t enough, Google is now planning to sell wireless phone services directly to consumers, according to reports from Fox News. Using Sprint and T-Mobile’s networks in the US, Google might offer discounted wireless data plans with this new venture, a move that will definitely pressure other major carriers to offer better deals and services or else risk losing customers to a huge new rival.

Make no mistake, however, it is all in the interests of getting more people online, something that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also has a huge interest in. Google is still the world’s largest advertiser thanks to its dominant position in the search engine space, and it wants a bigger audience for its ads.

Google already sells ultra-fast wired internet and cable TV in the form of Google Fiber, bit the service so far has been restricted to a few areas in Austin, Kansas.
