Jawbone, the fitness wearables maker, is venturing into new territory with the introduction of its own “partner marketplace” for third-party apps and hardware. The online store will let users purchase devices and services that take advantage of Jawbone’s fitness tracking and data syncing capabilities.
The offerings in the store are very limited at the moment, and Jawbone says that’s because it only wants to promote products that are the best in their class. It currently features “smart home” products like the Nest Learning Thermostat and other automation tools, such as Automatic’s driving assistant. Software, like the Sleepio app, is also available.
Notably, none of these services require an Up device, but according to Jawbone, “the experience is made better if you have one.” CEO Hosain Rahman said at Gigaom’s Structure Connect conference last year that he’d like to see Jawbone Up become a platform that other companies can build on top of. Jawbone Marketplace is an obvious step in that direction.
