LG announces four new mid-range phones ahead of MWC

LG doesn’t want to wait for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to unveil its new phones. That is probably a good thing, as these four are all mid-tier phones that undoubtedly would have gotten lost had it been at MWC with all the flashy flagship launches.

Meet the Magna, Spirit, Leon and Joy.

All four phones come in 3G or 4G variants, and include features for taking selfies and glancing at basic information from the notifications pulldown, even when the screen is locked. They’ll debut with Android 5.0 Lollipop, with the exception of the Joy, which may arrive in some markets with Android 4.4 KitKat.

The slightly more expensive Magna and Spirit will come with features normally reserved for LG’s premium range. The two phones will have slightly curved screens, rounded backs to provide better grip and in-cell touch displays — a screen combining the touch sensor and LCD, to make the devices thinner and more responsive.

The Magna handset has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies, and all of the devices have a feature enabling users to take pictures with a simple hand gesture. LG said it had extended the distance at which the camera can recognize the gestures to 1.5 meters, meaning users could attach a “selfie stick” and trigger the camera from further away.

Battery life also differs for the four devices. The Magna runs on a 2,540 mAh battery, which should be slightly better than the Nexus 5. The Spirit touts 2,100 mAh, while both the Leon and Joy have 1,900 mAh. The Magna, Spirit, and Leon will offer 8 GB of storage and 1 GB of RAM, while Joy has either 8 GB or 4 GB of space with 1 GB or 512 MB of RAM.

LG’s new midrange collection continues our legacy of offering amazing smartphones at reasonable prices,” says LG president and CEO Juno Cho in a statement. “For millions of consumers around the world, the deciding factor on which smartphone to buy isn’t how fast or how big it is but how balanced it is. With our new midrange smartphones, more and more customers will be looking to LG for their next handsets.”

LG hasn’t revealed the prices for these devices, a global rollout to selected markets is expected this week.
