Looks like the new Pebble smartwatch will have a colour screen after all

Pebble is just a day away from its big announcement of its new smartwatch, but it seems like it has busted its own party thanks to the silly mistake of one of its website managers.

Last week, 9to5Mac reported that the new Pebble would feature a color e-ink screen, a slimmer profile, an improved processor, and the same 7-day battery life as the original Pebble. Now the same site has unearthed an image hosted on Pebble’s website that is almost definitely the actual device.

As you can see here, the image depicts what appears to be a somewhat larger watch with a color display. It doesn’t appear to be of a particularly higher resolution (this is only a mockup, remember), and it’s not clear how colorful it can get, as we can only see yellow, black, and white. Still, Pebble has basically just had black up until now, so even that appears to be a big step forward. According to the usually reliable mark Gurman of 9to5Mac, the new Pebble’s week-long battery won’t suffer to power the new screen, so that’s definitely a big plus.

The watch reportedly won’t have a touchscreen, but a microphone is said to be another major hardware addition, finally allowing the watch to be used for voice commands and dictation. Gurman also reports that the watch’s operating system is receiving a significant overhaul from former team members behind webOS. The new software is supposed to place a heavier focus on notifications and alerts, which sounds a lot like what Android Wear has been doing.

There’s a good chance we’re looking at the real deal here, but we will kow for sure only when tomorrow arrives. Also, Pebble could be revealing more than one device, and this may be the lower-end plastic model. Either way, the wait isn’t very long now.
