Microsoft unveils HoloLens standalone wireless VR helmet

Windows 10 may have taken the limelight at the Microsoft event on Wednesday, but it wasn’t the only major revealation. The company also unveiled HoloLens, a standalone wireless helmet that creates holographic illusions in the wearer’s field of view. Microsoft, however, was quick to point out how it is different from the Oculus Rift and other virtual reality devices.

Unlike them, the HoloLens creates augumented reality, allowing its wearer to interact with virtual objects that live in their actual surroundings. Microsoft hopes the HoloLens will entice developers to code for the upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

The front of the HoloLens comprises of a see-through, shaded lens cover; the side arms include spatial sound, adding to its three-dimensionality. The headset doesn’t come with any wires hanging off the back, indicating that it will be a wireless experience — again, a very powerful distinction from the competition.

In addition to creating objects, the headset will be usable for gaming and even collaborating remotely. At the event, Microsoft showed off “holographic” interactions on the surface of Mars; according to one NASA staffer in the presentation video, the space agency hopes to put the headset into use this summer.

Of course, the “holo” name is a bit deceptive, as this is more of an augmented reality system than a truly holographic system.

Microsoft has opened the doors to their Microsoft HoloLens portal where you can sign up for more information on the device.
