Move over Retina MacBook, Toshiba has a 12-inch convertible laptop with a 4K display

The resolution war isn’t set to abate anytime soon.  Toshiba has just taken the wraps off the Satellite Radius 12, a 12.5-inch convertible laptop with 3840-by-2160 “4K” resolution. Just to give you an idea of the insanity here, Dell’s XPS 13 has a 3,200 x 1,800 pixel resolution, while Apple’s 12-inch Macbook has a 2,560 x 1,600 pixel screen. That also gives the Radius 12 an ultra-sharp 352ppi pixel density, which far surpasses the 264ppi of Apple’s 12-inch MacBook. Toshiba claims that the Satellite Radius 12’s IPS display covers 100% of the Adobe RGB spectrum, and is Technicolor Color Certified, which should mean great color accuracy and overall screen clarity.

The Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 will also come with as yet unnamed sixth-generation Skylake Intel Core processors. There’s no word on how many different versions of the Radius 12 will be available, which means RAM and storage configurations are also unknown, but only the top of the line laptop specs will be able to drive that blistering screen resolution. It also comes with facial authentication using Windows Hello, which uses an infrared camera to identify your face.

“Toshiba has made significant investments to deliver an exceptional customer experience across its portfolio of Windows devices,” said Peter Han, VP of worldwide OEM at Microsoft. “Toshiba’s Satellite Radius 12 provides an optimized experience that allows customers to take advantage of some of the exciting new features in Windows 10 including Windows Hello.”

Being a 2-in-1 “convertible”, the Toshiba Satellite Radius 12’s display can flip over 360 degrees allowing it to transform into five different modes: Laptop, Tablet, Tabletop, Presentation and Audience. Constructed of aluminium with a brushed metal finish, the Radius weighs 2.8 pounds, measures 15.4mm at its thickest point and features a backlit keyboard to aid late night typing sessions. Toshiba said the Radius 12 will have a long battery life, though it didn’t say how long. Intel executive Chris Walker said that eight hours — basically a full day’s work — is the likely battery life for laptops using Skylake.

The Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 will become available in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2015. Pricing has not been announced yet.
