No phone needed to use WhatsApp in near future

Facebook owned WhatsApp is the most popular chat application today in the market. No one can argue about it. Today, it is largely used on smart phones only, though it can be accessed on PC through a web client running in the browser. Very soon we will be able to do text messaging, file sharing and all other WhatsApp’s features from our PC. A study gives us the knowledge that the company might be working on a full-fledged desktop application for Windows and Mac operating systems. Images having references to WhatsApp’s desktop application being developed for the desktop was recently tweeted in a Twitter account, which was aiming to track changes in WhatsApp’s beta build. This account is not officially affiliated with with the company.

It is possible to use WhatsApp on PC through our browser. But it is very limited and also a very inconvenient method. Our phone should be connected to the internet to use WhatsApp’s web client. On top of it in this method the browser always needs to be kept open. It is possible to use WhatsApp’s important features like document sharing and voice calls without requiring the smartphone to be connected to the Internet all the time only if we have a full-fledged desktop application. Also the need to keep our browser window open all the time will be over come.

In the near future the company aims to introduce new features such as voice mail and the ability to share zip files for iOS and Android users. In the recent past we have come across news of instant messaging service mainly because it was temporarily banned in Brazil.

  1. When I read “No phone needed to use WhatsApp in near future,” I thought it’ll be possible to use the service without providing a phone number for a moment. That would have been a step towards real privacy. Other messengers (notably Threema) can be used without having to provide any personal information.
