OnePlus 2 to feature ‘cool’ new version of Snapdragon 810 chipset, may cost upto $399

The OnePlus 2 has a Herculean task up ahead. The successor to the highly successful OnePlus One will not only have to decimate the benchmarks created by the other brand flagships, but also live up to the ‘affordable’ lineage of its forebear. While the expectations from the new phone are extremely high, reports are suggesting it won’t probably be as disruptive as its forerunner.

Let’s touch upon what we are hinting at in the title first. The OnePlus 2 is expected to run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset – a piece of hardware that of late has earned a reputation for its hot temper. The high-end, expensive chip is currently powering flagship models such as the HTC One M9 and Sony Xperia Z4, and has been established to heat up beyond normal limits. Now that’s a bit of a problem, as the OnePlus 2 cannot afford to let these overheating issues malign its reputation upon launch.

The Snapdragon 810 octa-core chipset is blazing fast by itself, though when pushed to the limit it has a tendency to flare up, leading to throttling. Some of the four performance cores, when pushed to their limits for extended periods tend to give up on speed, shutting down, even. This leaves the processes with hardly any other option than looking at the other four cores, meant for lighter tasks. Inundated with kind of jobs they aren’t meant to handle, these cores offer lethargic performance, and also lead to battery issues.

As a solution, OnePlus is using version 2.1 of the chipset, which supposedly runs cooler, though there are phones running the chipset version and still dissipating heat like a cloth iron. OnePlus, thus isn’t relying entirely on Qualcomm’s claims of the new chipset being cooler. A whole bunch of changes have apparently been made to the upcoming OnePlus 2’s architecture to ensure there are absolutely no heat related issues.

To start with, the chipset will have a layer of thermal gel around it, with an additional graphite cover for a uniform, efficient dissipation of heat.

The company’s fully in-house Oxygen OS is also an important factor in keeping those temperatures down. OnePlus will ensure that the software works in tandem with the bad tempered hardware to ensure there are no heated fights between the couple.

OnePlus, through its website recently assured customers. “We have taken all the necessary precautions and beyond to prevent this overheating from occurring in the OnePlus 2. We worked very closely with Qualcomm’s engineers to integrate an improved version of the chipset in the OnePlus 2 and fine-tuned both hardware and software. The 2 will be cooler than ever” it said.

Another important bit of information about the OnePlus 2 is its price. With first rate hardware, including the aforementioned 810 chipset and rumoured 401 ppi, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, 4 GB Ram and a 16 mp rear camera, the price would probably not be as competitive as initially expected. The sub $300 expectations are too optimistic, and a realistic price for the phone is ranging between $349 to $399, depending on the in-built memory made available.

Like everyone else, we are keenly awaiting the launch of the newest version of this flagship killer. We’ll get back to you as soon as we get to hear any more from our little birdies. Stay hooked.
