OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has started training its next-generation AI model, GPT-5. Alongside this development, the company announced on Tuesday the establishment of a new Safety and Security Committee, which will include key board members. This comes after the recent dissolution of OpenAI’s Superalignment team, originally formed to address long-term AI risks. The new committee will undertake similar responsibilities, overseeing safety and security decisions for new projects and operations.
About the Safety and Security Committee
OpenAI announced in a blog post the formation of its new Safety and Security Committee, led by directors Bret Taylor (Chair), Adam D’Angelo, Nicole Seligman, and CEO Sam Altman. This committee is tasked with making critical safety and security recommendations to the company’s board. It will also include technical and policy experts such as Aleksander Madry, John Schulman (Head of Safety Systems), Matt Knight (Head of Security), and Jakub Pachocki (Chief Scientist). Over the next 90 days, these members will develop and implement processes and safeguards.
Purpose of the Safety and Security Committee
The new committee aims to thoroughly oversee OpenAI’s projects and operations to ensure ethical use and robust safety processes. As OpenAI advances towards developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the company is committed to balancing technological progress with safety. OpenAI emphasized, “While we are proud to build and release models that are industry-leading in both capabilities and safety, we welcome a robust debate at this important moment.” The committee’s recommendations and processes for managing safety and security are expected within 90 days.
This initiative marks a significant step for OpenAI, especially after Wired reported that the company’s safety and security measures had become less prominent following the dissolution of the Superalignment team. AI researchers have raised major concerns regarding the upcoming AI capabilities, stressing the importance of safeguarding technology and ensuring its ethical use.
