On Thursday, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that their PlayStation 4 sales hit 40 million units, and it continues being snapped up at a record-setting pace. PS4 has been dominating the market for the latest generation consoles. Industry trackers are currently pegging sales as being nearly double of that of rival Microsoft Xbox One. Andrew House, global chief executive officer, SIE, said in a statement, we are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time. Further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year, House said to expect virtual reality experiences along with an expanded lineup of exciting games.
Rival Microsoft has not yet released recent Xbox One sales figures. It was reported to be just shy of 19 million units as of the end of last year. Both the consoles launched in November, 2013. Sony and Microsoft are expected to be the main attractions at an annual Electronic Entertainment Exposition in Los Angeles next month. Rumors ahead of the trade show include that the rivals will unveil beefed-up versions PlayStation and Xbox consoles capable of being used with virtual reality gear. This certainly goes with House’s statement regarding VR experiences on the PS4. Sony has posted a $1.4 billion annual turnover last year, boosted by strong sales of its PlayStation console. PS4 has always seen the fastest and strongest adoption since the first generation of the console was introduced in late 1994.
