India is expected to reach approximately 1.37 billion total mobile subscriptions in by the year 2021. Latest report by Ericsson points towards these figures. The report also mentions that the average monthly data traffic per active smart phone is expected to surge five times, from the current 1.4 GB per month in 2015 to 7 GB per month by the year 2021. The report by Ericsson also notes that mobile broadband usage is set to increase in a dramatic manner, especially with smart phone subscriptions and total mobile traffic expected to increase four times and fifteen times respectively from 2015 to the year 2021. Thus, reaching 810 million smart phone subscriptions and a mobile traffic of 4.5 Exabytes per month.

According to the report, the GSM / EDGE subscriber base is also expected to grow until 2016 and then decline, mainly due to telecom operators’ initiatives to migrate 2G subscribers to 3G use, falling handset prices and bundling of data with devices. The WCDMA/HSPA and even LTE networks are expected to gain momentum, and the total subscriptions will account for 65 % of Indian subscriptions by the year 2021.Total smart phone traffic is currently growing seventeen-fold to 4.2 Exabytes per month and is expected to continue till 2021. Data traffic for other devices is also growing at a steady rate and is that too is expected to increase four times, between 2015 and 2021 to around 170 Petabytes per month.

Paolo Colella, region head for Ericsson in India, said, over 70% of smart phone users are satisfied with the network performance at home while doing instant messaging, web browsing or social networking using mobile internet. Over 60% of smart phone users are satisfied with the network performance at home while streaming videos using mobile internet. However, only 50% are satisfied with network performance for streaming videos on a smart phone while commuting.
