Russo Brothers set to direct both parts of Avengers: Infinity War

Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, will be directing Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 and 2. The Russo brothers are also directing the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, and it is noteworthy that they’ll have directed four Marvel movies by the time the two parts of Infinity War wrap up. Marvel definitely loves what they’ve done last summer.

The duo will be taking over the billion-dollar franchise from Joss Whedon, who directed the first two Avengers films. The second one, Avengers: Age of Ultron, opens May 1, in the US. Despite making the first Avengers the third-highest grossing film of all time (unadjusted for inflation) and a critical slam-dunk, Whedon has previously stated that he’s reluctant to return to the franchise. He states that it is a nightmare handling all these different superheroes into one coherent script.

AS of now, no writers are attached, but the brothers will likely reunite with Winter Soldier’s Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for Infinity War. The report claims that Captain America: Civil War—which pits Robert Downey Jr. against Chris Evans and also introduces Black Panther and Spider-Man to the MCU—ties very closely to the Infinity War saga, so it makes sense that the Russo Brothers, Markus, and McFeely will be the architects steering the ship. The story, broadly, will likely find Thanos (Josh Brolin) finally coming to blows with the Avengers and possibly the Guardians of the Galaxy over those darned infinity stones, so we’re going to be in for the biggest Marvel event yet.

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2 will be shot back-to-back as part of one long production in 2016 and 2017, in anticipation of a May 2018 release for Part 1 and May 2019 release for Part 2.
