Samsung joins hand with Microsoft for Windows 10 IoT Effort

Samsung is a multinational conglomerate company which has made its name in the mobile industry and is known as the world’s biggest maker of Android phones. The company is going to work hand-in-hand with Microsoft, another giant, to develop IoT devices based on Windows 10. Both the companies will work together to develop products which runs on the platform and will also integrate with other companies who are developing hardware and services on Microsoft’s OS.

There is nothing new about the partnership as the two companies are working together on Windows devices since last 30 years, which is noted on stage today. However, Microsoft was unable to be a winner in the last big innovation in the computation of smart phones and the honour was taken by Apple and Google’s Android. These are the two who dominate the smart phone market in all terms i.e.financials, mindshare as well as device penetration. We are also aware about the tensions between Samsung and Google over Android and this step shows Samsung is ready to dance if the occasion calls for it.

WP Hong, president of Samsung’s business solutions unit, gave out the news about the IoT partnership between the companies at the CES 2016 in Las Vegas. He also spoke about Samsung’s ambitions in the IoT spectrum: as device maker, chip maker and service provider. But Samsung is not seen as a platform maker and hence Microsoft walks in. As per Terry Myerson, VP of Microsoft’s Windows devices, platform is integral to Samsung’s IoT strategy.

Not much detail is given about the partnership but it seems to be a bigger relationship. This will also help Microsoft with its ambition to develop more universal windows apps. Universal apps are those which work across different devices but have a single unified security system across all. Myerson also highlighted about Galaxy Tab Pro S, a new Windows 10-based tablet at CES.
