Samsung has just set out a cryptic invite for its big event on March 1 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The company has usually used this annual event to unveil its flagship products, and this year looks no different.
For this year, Samsung’s invite is done up in stark black with the tagline “What’s Next” and the silhouette of a curve. As with all major smartphone launches, the teaser will lead to numerous interpretations but with the Galaxy Note 4 only released in September the Galaxy S6 is the only big game in town. So ideally, we are looking at a version of the Galaxy S6 with a curved screen, similar to the Galaxy Note Edge that launched last year. There are also widespread rumors that the Galaxy S6 will be made out of metal, a departure from the plastic designs the company has used in the past.
The Galaxy Note Edge is expected to be the inspiration for the curved variant of the Galaxy S6. Its display extends down one side giving quick access to buttons, apps and widgets without interrupting action on the main screen. Initially many saw it as a gimmick, but critical response has been strong and Samsung appears determined to use it as a key differentiator from rivals. Moreover, Samsung has recently filed for a patent showing a curved design on both sides of the screen, and this could be the first product resulting from that patent.
Another significant fact about the Galaxy S6 is that it will run on a Samsung chip rather than one from Qualcomm as it has done in the past. Qualcomm seemed to confirm rumors of the change — which is apparently due to overheating of the firm’s latest chipset — and we don’t have long to wait until we see how that affects the final product and user experience.
