Samsung to shut down ChatOn messaging service

Samsung-ChatON

Samsung is having a hard time holding onto its market share in the smartphone segment. The world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer is going thorugh a massive restructuring procedure which might see some senior members of the management heading to other directions.

One of Samsung’s restructuring plan is to shut down its ChatOn instant messaging service according to The Korea Times. ChatOn is currently available in 120 countries including India, and 63 different languages, and had 100 million users at one point. Which might explain the disclaimer that the Korean company might not be shutting it down completely. Instead, it might focus on markets where it’s more popular. It also may look into how many active users it has, as ChatOn comes preinstalled on most Samsung phones.

The Korea Times quotes an unnamed Samsung official as saying, “Samsung Electronics plans to exit from the mobile messaging market from region-to-region as part of corporate strategy to restructure unprofitable businesses and improve profitability.” Another unnamed Samsung official stated, “Samsung is on track to streamline its business units. From a business point of view, ChatOn isn’t a business that can show improvement in the future.”
