Stolen BMW 550i becomes temporary jail for the thief as officials remotely lock the sedan

Here’s another example of how far car tech has come. The Seattle police, with help of BMW, tracked and remotely locked a stolen BMW, trapping the carjacker inside the luxury sedan. The suspect, who was also carrying a small amount of methamphetamine, was booked for auto theft and drug possession. The incident was posted on Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) blog by deputy director of communications for SPD, Jonah Spangenthal-Lee.

The BMW 550i sedan, which was mistakenly left unlocked with the key fob inside, was stolen from a car park. The owner, who had loaned the car to a friend, discovered the theft at around 5 AM and immediately contacted the emergency telephone service, 911. The police officials then contacted BMW officials who, in a matter of hours, tracked the car to Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood.

Elaborating finer details about the incident, Jonah Spangenthal-Lee wrote on the blog, “When officers pulled up on the block around 5:45 AM, they found the BMW parked in an alley, still running, with a man asleep in the driver’s seat.”

“BMW employees were able to remotely lock the car’s doors, trapping the suspect inside, presumably while hissing something terrifying like ‘I’m not locked in here with you, you’re locked in here with me’ into the car’s sound system,” Spangenthal-Lee wrote.

The carjacker will probably stay away from other cars after the incident. Agree? Share your views and opinions with us through the comments section below.
