Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have announced English actor Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man. Holland will make his first appearance as the webslinger in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, before his first standalone movie releases on July 28th, 2017. He will become the third actor to play Spider-Man in a big budget motion picture, following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Maguire starred in the first three Spider-Man movies, while Garfield starred in the most recent two Amazing Spider-Man movies.
At 19, Holland will be the youngest actor to play Spider-Man yet. This affirms earlier news that Marvel plans to have Peter Parker in high school for some time, for which they needed a younger actor.
The actor, who was previously seen in the Ewan McGregor-Naomi Watts disaster movie The Impossible, and the TV series Wolf Hall, posted a series of short videos on his Instagram page showing off his acrobatic skills. Shot probably with an iPhone, the slick slow motion kicks and somersaults indicate that Holland would indeed make a good Spider-Man, and could possibly perform many of the action in the movie himself.
Marvel has also announced Jon Watts as the director of the Spider-Man reboot. Watts, director of Clowns and the upcoming Cop Car, has been hand-picked by Feige for his take on Spider-Man over the likes of Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation), and Ted Melfi (St. Vincent). Watts has a comedic background with his resume including work for The Onion News Network and an experience in directing commercials and music videos.

[blockquote cite=”Kevin Feige, Marvel boss” type=”left”]“As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”[/blockquote] [blockquote cite=”Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures” type=”left”]“It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”[/blockquote]

With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”[/blockquote]
