Once upon a time, not all cellphones were made in China and looked the same. You could pick from a brick like design, a clam shell or a flip phone. We may now have a choice again. If some new rumors are to be believed, a Samsung Galaxy X with its foldable screen could go on sale sometime in the latter half of 2017.
Apparently, Samsung is working on two new phones, one of which is a foldable, wallet like design. It can be used as a 5-inch phone when folded, and when spread out, the display size could grow by 3 inches. Some reports also mention the upcoming product to be a designer phone, which will only be launched in select markets.
A patent filed by Samsung has revealed details about the design, which reveals a central hinge that allows the device to bend like a make-up box or a wallet. A camera lens occupies space shown at the top of the closed clam shell, an area that becomes the rear panel, when the phone is unfolded. The front camera and speaker reside within the shell at a conventional location. Interestingly, the bottom of the screen appears to have a curved edge, and it’s visible when the phone is closed, which may serve as an information and notification ticker, similar to what we see on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
If and when this sees light of the day, expect the Samsung Galaxy X to be powered by the flagship Snapdragon 835 SoC, and feature top notch optics, hardware and display.
