No Fingerprint Protection For WhatsApp?
New end-to-end encryption feature of WhatsApp’s is something that most people look forward to. This feature ensures that, only the person who is sending the message, that is the sender and the person to whom the message is being send to, that is the receiver, can read the message. It also means, that no information will be leaked to any government official or any other person even if they want to leak it.
Today the most popular personal messaging app on Android is the Facebook. We find users using Facebook many times in a day for communicating some message or the other. But unfortunately, it does not come with a password protection mechanism. The Facebook-owned chat app relies on third-party app-protection providers or Android’s native password security. Relying on third party apps for protecting WhatsApp chats is not the correct solution to this problem, and that too at a time when almost every day we come across news of hackers hijacking apps to steal data.
Android is planning to feature fingerprint scanner on its smart phones irrespective of its cost, thus it becomes all the more important for WhatsApp also to provide Fingerprint scanner. But the problem, that is preventing WhatsApp from adding fingerprint protection is that, we find only 7.5% users making use of the latest Android Marshmallow OS. Thus we see that the number one messaging app attract very few users on Android Marshmallow to catch the interest of WhatsApp developers to install fingerprint scanners.
Another important features of Android Marshmallow operating system is fingerprint authentication. This means it does not only unlock smart phones but, developers can also also add fingerprint authentication in their apps. However, we expect that this feature will take some time to be implemented. But the messaging app users feel that WhatsApp should pay more attention towards launching its own WhatsApp locker app.
They seem to be misinformed. Biometrics should not be activated if you are security-conscious.
It is now getting known that the authentication by biometrics usually comes with poorer security than PIN/password-only authentication. The following video explains how biomerics makes a backdoor to password-protected information.
